Concept: Current Times (working title)

Social commentary on current times where people are in a physical world yet trapped in the digital world, where they only communicate digitally.

How this translates to the windows:

Window 1 Standard: Sterile-ish, blah office scene. Live person sits at desk in front of the computer where they are chatting with people outside of the window via their avatar.

Window 2 Standard: Avatar of live person appears on big screen. Live feed of chat appears in second, smaller screen. The live person responds in real time and interacts through chat AND by altering the animations of their avatar.

Window 1 Empty: Either an empty room with “Will be back at___” sign OR a dummy sleeping at a desk will be in the window when no live person is present.

Window 2 Empty: The avatar appears sleeping on the big screen, surrounded by social media icons, of which have numbers of missed messages growing over the time the live person is away (arbitrarily). In smaller screen the chat continues as people outside of the window message in. A tally appears above showing how many missed messages.

Beach Ball + Eye

Our team has finally landed on the idea and worked our way around the technical +

aesthetic part of the project

This is our mockup for the window. The idea is that there will be a bunch of screens around a giant beachball cutout that is constantly spinning, as if loading. Once the user comes over to the window and touches a capacitive sensor to help it “finish load” the ball will stop and all the videos in the surrounding screens will “load.”
The idea is to hinge on the “right now” and bring up things that are culturally relevant to our time and the fact that the internet houses such crazy amazing things.
We will have a total of six screens that will be playing different videos:

  1. A webcam and gives you a live feed of yourself
  2. A live feed of Tokyo or somewhere in Asia (and that way play with the right now again but the fact that it’s a totally different time of day somewhere else) OR A live feed of a kitten cam, panda cam, or some-other-baby-animal cam
  3. A Twitch.tv (social gaming video platform) video
  4. A music video–“Happy” by Pharrell seems to be a perfect choice
  5. A 3D WebGL sketch that shifts over time
  6. Trending tweets for a specific hashtag

Paula has started working on a max patch for the video feeds and we need to figure out how to incorporate the live feeds in the most efficient way, but we like it! Now, we just need to figure out what to do with the second window, and we’ll be ready to go.

  • Office hour with Shawn on 10/19 . So we should have the conclusion before class time.

2. EYE 

We worked on the idea around the sense of being in the ‘NOW’ and the saying ‘A blink of an eye’ which tied back to time. With an inspiration from Simon Doonan’s work with the gigantic mouth. We came up with design of an enormous eye that has shallow Iris and that’s where the content of the interaction will be placed.

This is the mock of of the window. The gigantic eye will be as big as the width of the window. The iris will be transparent. User will have the same interaction as the first window, as they touch the button.The eye lid will blink but content inside the eye is still a challenge for us. We thought about taking a photo or a piece of perspective painting.

But we are sure do not want anything with ‘surveillance’ and we want an outlet for the user to view after interact with out window by suggesting the user to see ‘result’ on our microsite.

With that being said, we will land the conclusion before class time tomorrow (10/19)

Progress :

  • Emmanuel has construct a prototype of the mechanic and installation of the eye.
  • We are working on eye design parellel with figuring out the rest of the features.

Time X-ray

The time x-ray tells the story of objects from the perspective of the past and future. In One window a conveyor belt delivers mutilated and destroyed objects into the x-ray machine where the viewer sees the moment of it’s destruction played in reverse until it is reassembled. On the opposite side the destruction that is yet to come is shown when a whole object enters the machine.

The factory is a combination of fabricated belts, a textural set and video inset inside found or created housings.
